Chapter 6

“Back to back weddings; how on earth are we going to pull this off?” Susan threw up her hands in despair. It was two weeks since Peter had proposed to Grace and she and Susan had been running around making arrangements for both their weddings.

She had been over to his parents’ home several times for dinner and she had discovered that they were far from being the snobs she had painted them to be. The house, although impressive and way too big, was quite homely and welcoming. “We just need to have grandchildren running around,” Sophia had said with an impish smile as they sat by the indoor pool having dinner.

He had given her a ring that had been in his family for generations. A multifaceted diamond that caught the light and sent off an iridescent glow and captured the eyes. Grace kept staring at it on her slim finger. He had given it to her just before they arrived at his parents’ house and had gone down on one knee. She had gone down to join him as he placed the ring on her finger. They had stopped at his apartment because he told her he had left something there.

“It’s beautiful,” she told him softly; twisting it this way and that to admire the different lights it sent off.

“You’re beautiful,” he had told her, pulling her towards him. “I love you Grace and I am going to do my best to be the husband God intends me to be in your life.”

She had pulled him down on top of her and they had not been able to say anything for a while.

Now they were at his parent’s and Sophia was admiring the ring on her finger.

“Jumping too far ahead Mom,” Peter had said dryly, pulling Grace closer to him.

“A mother can dream can’t she?” Sophia had challenged.

Paul had given her a tour of the house and she was properly awed and impressed but was determined not to keep reminding herself that she did not belong; she loved Peter and that was that.

Sophia had insisted on taking over the planning but Grace had drawn the line about her buying her wedding gown; she wanted to do it herself and besides; Uncle Joe and Aunt Mabel had given her a generous check as a wedding present. “We might not be as wealthy as they are but we can certainly contribute.” Uncle Joe had said firmly.

Susan was getting married on Saturday and she was getting married the Saturday after and they were going to be each other’s maid of honor.

“I can’t believe that you managed to capture the most eligible man this side of town; except for Daniel of course.” Susan grinned at Grace. They were in the store where Grace was fitting on her bridesmaid dress.

“Of course,” Grace said dryly as she came out of the changing room. The color was rose pink and the style was simple. It was going to be a morning wedding and the dress just grazed her knees.
